WEEK 12 AND 13 PRODUCTION DIARY

Over these past two weeks, I have been researching on rap magazines taking into consideration their conventions and production style. After doing this research I noticed that most rap magazines use pictures which are dull and colourful texts, this is to make the text the center of attraction. The images may be dull but they are of a high quality, some images are black and white. I also noticed that most rap magazines have their main image over the masthead, this connotes power and domination which is what rap music represents. As a result of this research I have to improve on my ideas for my final production so that it meets the conventions of the genre. I was able to complete my front cover but after doing this research I realised that it needed some changes. This coming week I will be improving on the work which I've already done and start creating my contents page.

MAGAZINE GENRE RESEARCH/INFLUENCE

This front cover of Vibe's 2013 magazine issue greatly influences my final production. The masthead of my music magazine's front cover like Vibe's will be in red in order to make it bold. The model in the main image's head will also be over the masthead which connotes domination and power. This front cover is appealing not just because of the main image but also as a result the fonts used, the font colours and it's structure/organisation. Like the main image of this front cover, the main image of my final production will be a mid-shot. However, the model in my main image unlike the model here will be wearing a white vest which covers his masculine body and sun-glasses to cover up his eyes. Covering up his eyes prevents a direct mode of address. In addition to using the red and white colours for my fonts, I will also use colours like yellow and blue because they appeal to my target audience and will stand out more. Most rap magazine promote masculinity by revealing the muscles of the actor or providing a direct mode of address which connotes confidence/aggression. However, I have chosen to present a softer image of rapper by covering up most of the actor on my front cover's muscles and using a sunglasses to prevent direct mode of address. I have done this to present rappers contrary to the aggressive image they are usually presented as. My actor has a smiling facial expression which connotes amiability, this is contrary to the aggressive facial expression actors on rap magazines usually have. Furthermore, creating a friendly facial expression suggests that I am presenting rappers in a more friendly way.

The image on the right is the contents page of a Vibe 2013 magazine issue. I would like the contents page of my final product to resemble this in some ways. The main image of my contents page will also be of the same shot as the main image of this contents page but however, my main image will consist of both male and female to connote gender equality and appeal to my target audience. Like the background in this issue, I will also use a plain background but of a different colour. Furthermore, I will use the same font style but a different font colour on the contents page of my final product.

This double page spread article greatly influences the double page spread article of my final product. The layout of the page is spectacular and the arrangement of the images and text is appealing. In my final production's double page spread, I will follow this page structure, arranging the the images and text just as this is arranged. However, I might not use the same font sizes and colours or the same background colour because it doesn't appeal to my target audience.

WEEK 11 PRODUCTION DIARY

This week I started working on the front cover of my final production (music magazine). I used the Adobe Photoshop software to work on this product. I came up with the title (masthead) Vertical because its connotations suit the genre of the music magazine. I am not quite satisfied with the work I have done so far on my fornt cover because it doesn't look really professional. However, I believe that the them and the range of fonts I used are appropriate, I will however have to add more cover lines on the page and arrange the texts properly.

ANALYSING THE MISE-EN-SCENE OF THE PARLOUR SCENE IN THE MOVIE PSYCHO

The most successful mise-en-scene in this scene is the dark cloud. This is a pathetic fallacy which connotes horror and evil as evil things mostly happen when it is dark. In addition to that, Norman walking under this dark cloud from his mother's part of the property to his connotes that he is a carier/representative of evil as the cloud which is the evil is over him.

The way in which the dark cloud reveals Norman's character is similar to the connotation of the crow in his palour. Just like a dark cloud, a crow represents evil but most importantly it represents death. So the presence of the crow in the scene also suggests that Norman is evil but also that he holds the power of death. These two mise-en-scene forshadow the death of Marion.

WEEK 9 PRODUCTION DIARY

This week, I took the mock which was quite easy and straight forward. In the mock I created the flatplan for my final production (music magazine), analysed the results I've had so far with regards to reasearch and planning for my final production and stated some ideas I might change. I believe that my flat plan was genuine and will possibly be what I will use to create my final production because I am happy with it. However, I might change the genre of the music magazine I wish to create from RnB and Rap genre to only the Rap genre because it is easier to do a magazine with only one specific genre.I also created the moodboard using Blitslide so that I can upload it on my blog. At first I wanted to use Glogster but it proved difficult to use so I switched to Biteslide.  On my moodboard are ideas of how I want my final production to look like, which is where I want the images to be, how I want everything to be represented and also ideas of the Masthead. This whole week has been a productive week and I believe that I am on target, I must however learn to use Glogster as it might be important in another production.

Update

Whilst watching these two music videos, I noticed the differences between them. I noticed that the first was much more wild which shows the alter ego of Nicki Minaj, the second is much more sentimental which connotes what she is going through at that time. I researched the amount of views each had and found out that the first had 798,652 views whilst the second had 309,765 views. The statistics of their views shows that people prefer when rap musicians sing dancehall songs than when they sing sentimental songs. However, Nicki Minaj is highly commended for her excellent use of alter ego as she switches from different music genres but still instill rap essence into it. If I am ever going to do a music video I will do a music video which has diffent sentiments but has rap essence.

UPDATE

It seems like the music industry is indeed good at bringing the negative personality out of stars we never thought had one. First it was Miley whose new videos 'Wrecking ball' and 'We won't Stop' shocked the world due to its contents, Miley has now turned from the little Disney star we all knew to a great nude star. However another star that caught my attention today was Rihanna, she hasn't always been known as the Godly or saint type but neither has she been known to be posing nude for magazine covers. here are her pictures I came across and a new November magazine issue with Miley Cyrus on its front cover,... and yes as you thought the word 'sex' is definitely on that cover.

Miley and Rihanna should definitely hang out..
but..... WHAT IS THE HOLLYWOOD(AMERICAN)MEDIA TURNING INTO??!!!!

FEATURE ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON HOMEWORK

NICOLE SHERZINGER'S GLAMOUR FEATURE ANALYSIS
Glamour magazine's page 262 feature story centers on the famous 35-year old Musician, Fashion Icon and Xfactor judge Nicole Sherzinger, using her image as the main featured image. As Nicole is a 35-year old star who grew up overcoming many obstacles in life such as broken relationships which makes her an inspiration to many women ranging from the ages 25-40, using her picture and story suggests that the secondary target demographic of this article is women between the ages 25-40 who have relationship issues that look up to her success as an inspiration, however, it may also primarily appeal to the target demographic of her fans( people that love her music and personality) ranging from the ages 15-30 which mainly comprises of girls.
It is a first person narrative which mainly uses a not too formal language such as “Last night Nicole Sherzinger went back to her day job", this statement doesn't use slang but doesn't have a formal vocabulary such saying 'profession' instead of 'job', and it also uses quotes. However, further down it uses completely informal languages such as "balls it out", the word 'balls' is a colloquial language for a man's testicles so using this word brings an informal and casual connection with the reader. Another colloquial word used is the word "cojones" which means 'to have balls/to stand up for something’; this is informal because a professional person or even anyone can't grasp its meaning without looking it up in an urban dictionary. The feature uses a white background and has all its fonts in black, this is to create a focused attention on the text so the readers won't be distracted by different colours, these colours might had also been used because black represents courage and hence that is what the story talks about, having the fonts in black enhances the theme of the text. The feature uses Calibri (Body) font for its text and uses Century Gothic fonts for its main cover line capitalizing the words "FAMILY PERSON" to add emphasis on its importance.
The image is a single image which covers about 80% of the double page spread, aligned right with the text covering about 20% aligned left. The main cover line is in the center of the text space therefore cutting the text into two parts. The feature uses the informal and chatty language register therefore addressing the reader as a member of a crowd which mainly consists of Nicole's fans. In the image, Nicole wears a blue jumper which stops at at her hip revealing her feet in black suede shoes, sitting on a couch. The colour of her jumper(blue) represents freedom which connotes that she is free of her burdens/ heartaches and is back on her feet, she gives the readers a direct mode of address which emphasises her courage and the gaze of" yes I'm back on my feet", the black shoe on her feet connotes that she is now bold and strong enough to stand on her feet, the greenery in the background of the image suggests that she is a natural and not faking her personality like some other stars do.
Like in the double page spread, on the front cover of the magazine Nicole Sherzinger's image is used as the main image where she also gives a direct mode of address but in the image on the front cover she is fully clothed unlike in the feature where she wears only a jumper that stops at her hip with no trousers. Some of its fonts like in the double page spread are black which also enhances the theme of the text (courage), informal words such as "sex" and "weirdest" and "balls" are also used in the cover lines of the magazine's front cover. The article does require prior knowledge because it doesn't clearly explain Nicole's lifestyle in a nutshell such as " after her split from Britain's own F1 Champ", if the reader doesn't know who Britain's F1 Champ was or what transpired between her and this Champ, they won’t understand what the text is talking about. Another phrase which isn't comprehensible without prior knowledge is "Lewis dedicated his historic win at the Hungarian Grand Prix to Nicole", at this point if the reader has no idea who Lewis is or how he relates with Nicole and what A Hungarian Grand Prix is they won’t know the message it is trying to send out or understand that bit of Nicole's bibliography.

Compared to the Nicole Sherzinger's feature, this feature also uses the image of a Musician named Kelly Rowland. Unlike Nicole Sherzinger's, this feature of Kelly uses two images, one big image of her dressed classy and glamorous but also with a direct mode of address which accompanied with her posture and outfit connotes her success as in contrary with the other little picture on the left, she is in the main image presented as an independent and successful musician. Both features use quotes and are in the first person narrative, they also use black fonts which enhance the theme of the text and also use a white background which allows the reader focus on the text instead of the colours used. Both articles use colloquial languages which creates an immediate bond with the readers, the main target demographic of this article is women ranging from the ages of 18-30 as her looks are too sexual for a younger person.

MEDIA HOMEWORK- VOGUE MAGAZINE FRONT COVER ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON WITH THE WEEK'S FRONT COVER

VOGUE FRONT COVER ANALYSIS

This is the front cover of a Vogue magazine featuring International musician Beyoncé. This image has been chosen because it attracts people, as she is a famous musician, on seeing her image on the front cover of the magazine her fans will purchase definitely purchase it. Beyoncé is also known as a strong black woman and seen by many people as an inspiration for succeeding in life so by putting her image of their front cover, the Vogue corporation sticks to its theme of fashion which is "a woman is beautiful if she is strong". The image was mainly chosen because it appeals to their target demographic which is young and classy women between the ages 25-45, however, because her fans range from ages 10-35 as research has proven, they might be interested in it when they see her picture. The image is a centre shot with her head covering the masthead which connotes that she has to be centre of attention, she is looking directly at the camera, her unmatched facial beauty becoming the focal point of the shot, her hair is also pulled back to let the readers perfectly examine her flawless face, the image is placed against a grey background.
This is a fashion magazine cover which has been proven through research I did, it also has cover lines such as "strong and sexy suits", "shockingly chic accessories", "new looks for the night" and a main cover line which reads "spring surprises", these words are all associated with fashion and clothing so therefore its language register suggests that it is a fashion magazine. Beyoncé is also seen as a fashion icon as her mother is a talented designer that designs her cloths so it is also observed that it is a fashion magazine by the image used. Research has proven that this magazine earned about 355,397 readership statistics and has out sold Michelle Obama's Fahionista magazine which sold about 293,978 bringing it to a total of about a difference of 60,000 with Beyoncé’s on the lead.
Beyoncé’s costume on this cover is a white dress that has one arm having a strap only attached to the black vest and the other arm long with a collar overlapping her shoulder revealing a black inner material. The use of black as a colour in the costume accompanied with her direct look at the camera suggests that she is bold and courageous; her body posture suggests that she is aware that she is bold. She wore no jewelleries and a nude lip gloss with little make-up, this fact and the white colour of her costume suggests that her beauty is presented in a pure way, as white represents purity and nude lip gloss represents natural beauty.
This magazine mainly appeals to lovers of high-class fashion that purchase fashion magazines and also her fans as they will purchase it when they see her image on its front cover, though some men might grab a copy this mostly attracts women ranging from the ages 20-45 that are interested in new fashion or her fans ranging from the ages 10-35.
The picture is used against a plain grey background which makes her the main attraction by making her looks stand out than any other thing on the cover. Colours such as white, black and red are used because the background is dark so therefore colours that stood out had to be used to attract attention especially the use of red in the masthead.
    FRONT COVER COMPARISON

Comapring these two front covers, it is first noticed that 'Vogue' is a Fashion Magazine and The Week is a political magazine. Whilst 'Vogue' makes use of photographic images and no use of props, The Week uses an animated image as its main image. The Vogue magazine uses only one image which is that of Beyonce but The Week uses four images, however, despite these differences they still have few similarities.
'Vogue' uses white and, red and black font colours and that can also be seen on The Week's front cover, both covers' images have been chosen because it appeals to the target audience and promotes sales.
Either way they still have more differences than similarities. The Vogue magazine has all its fonts capitalised whilst The Week only capitalised its masthead and the beginning of nouns or a sentence. The language used in the vogue magazine is quite informal because it uses words like sexy and chic, it also has a seductive language in texts like "new looks for the night" whilst The Week magazine uses strictly formal language. 'Vogue' appeals to the demographic of fashion lovers whilst The Week appeals to people interested in political or intelligent university students

FONT COLOUR SCHEME

Choosing a colour for my fonts was really quite difficult so i created this font colour scheme to make it easier for me, I decided to use the black, sky blue and thick blue colours for the fonts of my cover line, I then used the cream font for my Masthead and Main coverline on both the front and content page.

WEEK 3 PRODUCTION DIARY

This week I started creating the final draft of my preliminary task (school publication), I found it difficult to choose the right font syle and colour for the various language I used so inorder to make it easier i created a font style document on which I tested the masthead on different font styles to choose an appropriate one. However, I solved the font issues and completed the front cover of my final draft, I will be completing my contents page this weekend there and then I will be done with my preliminary task. Today I started using Bubbl.us presentation tool, I do not find it difficult to use because the steps are quite comprehensible and at the end it makes your presentation stylish.

WEEK 2 PRODUCTION DIARY

this week I drew my flat plan and took pictures for my school publication, the above pictures are the front cover and content page of my flat plan that I completed this week, however I've also transferred it onto a publisher document and I've started jotting down the language and words to use for my final draft.

WEEK 1 PRODUCTION DIARY

]
This week we had to take real pictures to use on our final School Publication draft, So I decided to take these three because using a boy and a girl shows that it is a mixed gender school and the different skin tones shows that it is a multicultual school which promotes different races. I've decided to use the first picture on my front cover as the main image and the other two on my contents page.

Music front cover analysis.

FIRST DRAFT FLATPLAN

My first idea of a flat plan. This is the first layout I came up with as my flat plan, it might be the design I'll use for the main magazine because I'm satisfied with my work. However my taste might change and if so hopefully I will come up with something better.
